When I got to Austin, I remember Madylyn Murray O’Hair saying, “more people have died in the name of religion than any other reason.” It may be true, but in our day more people have died in the name of democracy than any other reason. Does that make democracy a bad idea, too?
For many people of faith, bullying other people into our way of thinking is the farthest thing from our minds. Thanks be to Alternet for this article on some religious people who hated religious bullies as much as any atheist could. Some of us hate fundamentalism for all the reasons atheists do, but we have one more reason to hate it. Fundamentalism is only using religion to get power. It tells lies about the teachings of every religion to which it attaches itself like mistletoe. Anyone who loves the teachings of the sermon on the mound cannot but hate religions of judgment and hate.
