This story illustrates why it is so important to de-politicize the courts. The courts have ruled through the Citizens’ United decision that corporations are free to empty unlimited amounts of money into campaigns. The original ruling included a stipulation that the American people could find out how much money was spent and by whom. In an appeal that stipulation was removed. If this ruling stands, corporations are not only free to try to buy elections, but also, because there are no disclosure laws, we will never know what hit us.
