Oppressed people are not only taken advantage of, they are expected to soothe the conscience of the oppressor as well. So women are expect to be submissive and sweet even as they are passed over for promotions. Gays and lesbians are expected to live invisibly or play out stereotyped roles without asking for marriage rights. Many who will tolerate a president with black skin would never tolerate a black leader who looked at the camera without deference to white privilege and told America the truth about it’s racism.
