I wonder if it would be helpful in political discussions to divide the topic of politics into two categories. If by “government” we meant the actual constitutional democratic process of decision making, infrastructure, and programs that tend to the welfare of the people. And, if by “state,” we meant systems of control like police, military, prisons, and spying both foreign and domestic. If the idea of governance was divided thus, I wonder if many groups who now find themselves in opposition might find common cause by asking how we can shrink the state without destroying the government?
I think your heart may be in the right place but you’re missing something big:

Say more, please. Even if we disagree about something I think this is a very important topic. Do you believe there is such a thing possible as a non-oppressive government?
You’re sweet and everything and want to help people but the Democrats/liberals aren’t any better than the Republicans (OK–slightly better). It’s not left/right; it’s up/down. Yes there is a non-oppressive government, conceivably, but who wants it? We want an oppressive government that oppresses the hell out of the criminal class. But the government wants to keep that class to scare the rest of us. Do you truly understand how powerful our federal government is? Think about the Snowden revelations, the two wars, the defense budget…they’re next to God! Why haven’t they directed the resources to make America heaven? They. Don’t. Want. To. We could wipe out crime and feed everybody tomorrow, but that would threaten the powerful. It would mean everybody was middle class. A heaven to a lot of us but hell for the temporal and small minded. So please Rev. Jim quit beating up the people who actually would agree with you. Conservatives aren’t inherently stupid and mean; they’re trying to solve the same problems you are. I know anarchy tyranny is a conservative construct but think about it fairly. What are the greatest threats to decent, open-minded people? They come from above and below.
I agree with almost everything you are saying. I agree that it isn’t left/right, but up/down which is why I think focusing on government tyranny and ignoring private corporate tyranny makes American Libertarianism so dangerous. At least with a government you can vote. If we shut down government regulations of corporations as our first move, it will also be our last move for a long, long time.
Even classical anarchists like Bakunin and Malatesta, and modern one’s like Chomsky do not consider individualist libertarianism to be true anarchy, but instead a disguised individualized tyranny. If you don’t regulate capitalism, how can freedom follow from a dog eat dog economic system?
