The Tampa Bay Times and the Center for Investigative Reporting came together to give us a stunning report of America’s worst charities. For example, Kid’s Wish Network brought in 127.8 million dollars and gave out 109.8 million to solicitors. Only 2.5% of the money raised went to actual direct cash aid. Other charities on the list gave out less than 1% of the money they raised as direct cash aid.

As much as some people like to bash government attempts to regulate charities, such democratic oversite is the only way to make charities accountable to the people. If we took our common life seriously, we could monitor and shut down these kinds of scam artists before they fleeced good hearted people of millions of dollars.
