Karl Marx believed that capitalist culture drifts toward a “false consciousness” where products and production systems replace relationships between actual human beings. Marx would probably not have been surprised to find that the United States has come to believe corporations are “persons” with rights over and above those of actual persons. He would understand that wealth and status have become ends in themselves displacing any duty some individuals feel to the common good. But, I think even Marx would be surprised with recent court rulings saying that companies can hold religious beliefs and therefore should not be required to provide reproductive healthcare. The court has never said that a pacifist religion could take away the constitutional right of its workers to bear arms, only that anti-choice business owners can take away a woman’s right to birth control and abortion.
