Chuck Hagel has passed his contentious confirmation process and now is officially our Secretary of Defense. He was sworn in a small ceremony using a Bible, which is ironic since his job description will be to break the sixth, eighth and ninth commandments. For those readers not versed in scripture, that means he, like any Secretary of Defense, will be swearing to kill (defend America even when we are not being attacked,) rob (use violent means to protect American business interests,) and lie (present the party line even if it is deceptive,) all for our great nation.
The oath of office was administered by a representative of those masters of honesty, the Pentagon. Theoretically, it will be the last time Mr. Hagel will be asked to tell the truth for some time.
