It is interesting to consider what parts of government are shut down, and what are not. There is money for domestic spying, but not for regulating banks and Wall Street robbers. There is still money for drones, but not for food inspectors. There is money for congressional salaries, but not for food programs for the poorest of poor. As David Sirota notes in Salon, that’s because some people hate government (safety net, inspectors, regulators, etc.) but love the State (police state programs and the military industrial complex.)
